Helles Bier & The Commercial Tavern: The Perfect Combination for the Female Beer Drinker

While I usually find bars in and around Shoreditch to be overly “ironic” and full of cheap vodka and overly priced fancy beers – I was incredibly pleased to discover that The Commercial Tavern was none of these things.

Sure it had cheap vodka, but more importantly, it had some excellent treasures on tap.
In the fridge they had the usual Aspall ciders, and chilled wines, but what caught my eye (and my taste buds) was that they had Meantime Brewery’s Helles Bier on draft.

This “country style lager” is absolutely gorgeous, and should delight any discerning female palette.
According to Meantime, “helles” is the German word for “light”, and compared to Meantime’s other bad boy brews like their signature IPA – Helles is definitely lighter.

Measuring in at 4.4% ABV, Helles is citrusy, a bit hoppy, but altogether a refreshingly smooth brew that won’t leave your pout puckering from bitterness.

In my opinion, Helles Bier embodies a lot of what The Commercial Tavern is about. The decor is a kitschy blend of grandma-chic meets antique-glam with vintage mirrors on the ceiling, and quite the collection of extravagant chandeliers dangling above the bar.

This is the perfect place for you and your gal pals to meet on a Thursday night, perch on their lovely white tables, and have a proper chat over a pint (or half-pint!) of Helles.

Trust me, it will be the highlight to your week. (Or dare I say month?)

Beer and Entertainment

Posted by Kristy on 12:33 pm, February 3, 2010

The match and a pint is one of the pub’s most popular combinations. Both beer and sport have much in common: both are part of industries made up of a large percentage of men, both are traditionally marketed at men, and the biggest fans of each are usually men. While I don’t want to suggest that pubs stop showing football, I do want to suggest that it’s time for some pubs to make a bigger effort when it comes to entertainment: namely by acknowledging the female half of the population.

So what can pubs do in order to attract more female punters? Perhaps they should just change the channel: shows such as the X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing attract over 10 million viewers at their peaks, whereas football matches bring in about a million. Would these shows work in the pub? Given how much talk about these shows is generated on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, it’s clear that they are a real conversation starter among fans – and although Twitter is great, it’s no real substitute for experiencing things together and talking about it over a drink.

Our research into women and beer found that women are more likely to choose beer when at a festival, making it clear that beer can be a event drink for us. Perhaps it would be wise for more pubs to capitalise on this by enhancing the festival feel – and supporting local musical talent at the same time. Or pubs that specialise in great food or a large range of beers could hold beer pairing events – at BitterSweet we’ve held some beer and food matching events with great success.

Alternatively, we’ve heard of several bars and pubs enticing people to their doors through using their space to put on something different – the Marksman in London has just started a fashion pub quiz, which has been posted about by top fashion bloggers Susie Bubble and Isabelle OC. We’ve also heard of events from life drawing sessions in Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch to clairvoyants and beauty treatments at the Dalriada in Edinburgh’s Portobello.

What do you think? Would you be more likely to go to the pub if something different was happening there?

Is Beer the Latest Hot Celebrity Trend?

Posted by Kristy on 11:27 am, January 29, 2010

Forget designer handbags, divorce papers or tiny dogs – the latest celeb accessory for 2010 is a beer in hand. Don’t believe us? We’ve noticed plenty of female celebrities enjoying beer just like we do, after having caught on to what we know already: that beer can be a lighter alternative to wine or spirits in both calories and alcohol content.

Madonna: Is that a beer bottle we can see the former Material Girl holding in her latest ad campaign for Dolce and Gabbana? Judge for yourself here. We always knew that beer and fashion was the perfect mix – watch this space for news about our glassware collaboration with Amy from PPQ.

Nicola T: At BitterSweet Partnership she was our favourite to win Celeb Big Brother so we’re gutted she was voted out early – she came to our garden party in the summer to help us celebrate the beauty of beer, plus we saw her sipping on a can of lager while in the house.

Rihanna: The Russian Roulette singer was recently spotted holidaying with a bottle of beer, showing off her enviable figure in a cut-out swimsuit. We’re not saying that drinking beer will get you a body like hers- however, swapping a large glass of red wine at 170 calories for a bottle of beer at 142 calories is a more figure-friendly choice.

Cat Deeley: OK! Magazine has spotted her enjoying an al-fresco beer – we can’t wait until the weather turns so we can join her!

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of celebrities – at the BitterSweet Garden Party we had every kind of celeb, from pop star (Kimberley from the Pussycat Dolls) to fashionista (Brix Smith Start) to actress (Ali Bastian) in attendance to celebrate the beauty of beer. We’ll let you know if we spot any more – but in the meantime, do you know of any female celebs with a taste for beer? Do you think that seeing the likes of Rihanna drinking beer will help to break down some of the myths and stereotypes surrounding it?

Beer and Beauty

Posted by Kristy on 3:40 pm, January 22, 2010

Isn’t January awful? The weather’s miserable, Christmas is nearly a whole year away, and a lot of us have been snowed in. So what do you do when you can’t make it out to the pub? We’ve been spending the time thinking positively, and have been thinking about the many reasons there are to love beer. One reason is that it can be great as a beauty treatment, improving skin and hair. And far be it from me to recommend something I haven’t tried! This month I’ve gone to great lengths – from mashing sweet potato to hunting down Catherine Zeta Jones’s favourite shampoo – to find out the best ways to use beer to enhance your beauty regime. Here’s a summary of what I’ve found so far.

Hair

• Linco Beer Shampoo: Dennis The Chemist tells me that this is Catherine Zeta Jones’s favourite shampoo – I’m unconvinced. It smells like an 80’s hairdressers, and left my hair feeling dry and unmanageable. I wouldn’t recommend this unless you’re entering a Wurzel Gummidge look-a-like competition!

• Lush’s Cynthia Sylvia Stout: It smells divine and leaves your hair feeling squeaky clean. While it looks like stout, it doesn’t smell like it – so no worries there about smelling like a brewery! I’d buy this again.

Skin

• The beer bath: I added Worthington White Shield to my bath and at first I despaired – my bathroom smelled like an old slop tray. But just like the beer itself, the character of the bath changed and suddenly I was enveloped by a delicious, warm, sweet, malty horlicks smell that was so comforting and relaxing I could hardly keep my eyes open and I could have stayed in it for ever. My skin was soft afterwards and it didn’t make me smell like a half-empty beer glass like I feared!

• The beer facemask, 1: After finding a recipe on BellaSugar, I decided to give the beer facemask a go: all you need is a cup of mashed sweet potato with two tablespoons of beer mixed in. Mixing it up was easy, getting it to stay on my face was difficult – as was getting rid of the orange tinge. Don’t try this one at home.

• The beer facemask, 2: Made out of a mixture of beer, Yoghurt, Olive Oil, egg, lemon and almond extract, this was a lot better than the last one – it hardened like a real facemask and smelled delicious. Really relaxing and worth a try.

So, as you can see, my experiments with beer beauty have been mixed, but definitely worth doing. You can read about all of these in more detail on my personal blog – and soon I’ll be trying even more. I’ll keep you updated!

Have you ever tried beer as a beauty treatment? What did you try, and would you recommend it?

The Information Age and Pubs

Posted by Kristy on 3:32 pm, January 18, 2010

If you were tuned into Channel 4 last Thursday night, you might have seen the ladies on My Big Fat Diet Show shocked to find out that there are more calories in orange juice than beer. Many of you will probably find this fact surprising too, I’m sure, and I find the fact that it does come as a surprise very interesting. We live in an increasingly calorie-conscious world, with green, orange and red symbols on the front of  most food packages, telling us about the vital statistics of the food we are about to eat.  But when it comes to eating and drinking out, there is an information drought – and while many women could tell you how many calories are in a slice of cake, many would struggle to tell you how many calories are in half a pint of lager.

Here at BitterSweet Partnership, part of our work is to dispel some of the myths surrounding beer, and one of the biggest factors putting women off beer is the perceived calorie content. 39% of women we surveyed told us that the beer industry needs to reduce the calorie content of beer to make it more appealing to them. If you’re new to our work, you might be surprised to hear that it may already be less calorific than you think – there are more calories in a double gin and tonic, a can of cola or a large glass of wine than there are in a bottle of beer. 16% of women thought of those four drinks, beer would have the most.

At this time of year, when there is a large focus on health and well-being, calorie content becomes more relevant – and as the surprised reaction to the orange juice fact shows, what people think about the content of their food and drink can sometimes be misinformed. It’s funny that in the “Information Age”, we have to seek out information about what we’re eating and drinking. These days, smart food and drink retailers are satisfying an appetite for information – take Pret and Eat as a couple of great examples. They have the details on their websites, as well as in-store, to tell us exactly what we’re eating – meaning that we can make choices that fit in with whatever nutritional goals we have. Hopefully one day we can start to see this as a standard across drinks packaging and on menus too.

What do you think – is calorie content a consideration in choosing your drinks? Would you like to see more information about the calorie content of drinks available in pubs and bars?

New Beer’s Resolutions

Posted by Kristy on 3:02 pm, January 7, 2010

The festive season is over, and for some, that means a return to work, January blues, and wrapping up warmly as we emerge from our homes into the cold (if you can make it through the snow) . January may be bleak, but with it comes the promise of regeneration and a fresh start in the shape of New Year’s Resolutions. I think almost everyone has made resolutions of the puritan sort at some point: giving up ‘bad’ things, aiming to go to the gym eight times a week, and the like. I think that almost everyone has broken these kinds of resolution too (I know I have) – so, this year, why not join me in making an achievable and enjoyable goal for 2010? I have some beer related suggestions:

Resolve to enjoy the things you like – in moderation: January is cold and miserable enough without having to give up something you really like. Not to mention the fact that if you cut something out completely, it’ll seem like forbidden fruit and even more tempting than before! So why not aim for moderation? If you’ve decided to take up an active new hobby, such as dancing, you can afford to enjoy a little of what you fancy – 29 minutes of the twist will burn off one bottle of lager, and 22 minutes of salsa will burn off one bottle of ale

Help out local enterprise: What could be better than making a resolution to support local pubs? Try out new ones in your area – I can’t think of a more fun way to support local business! And if you know somewhere worth shouting about, why not submit your favourite bar or pub to our site to let everyone know why you love it: http://www.bittersweetpartnership.com/favourite_bars/

• Develop a beer-related skill: Instead of the customary evening classes in French and Spanish, why not try a beer related course? The Beer Academy is running beer tasting events where you can learn about beer tasting, food and beer matching, presentation and more. Or if you’d rather experiment at home, you could try brewing your own (more on this later!)

Here at BitterSweet we’re wishing everyone a very happy new year – or should that be ‘new beer’?

Decadent Christmas Treats

Posted by Cate Sevilla on 11:50 am, December 23, 2009

Image © BitchBuzz

It might be cold outside, but this time of year, you can get a little bit bored of all of the mince pies and Christmas pudding.

Sure hot treats can be delicious, but as we all learned with the decadent chocolate and stout ice cream, cold treats this time of year (as long as you’re outside!) can be positively delightful. Or, if nothing else, a welcome break from the gingerbread houses and powdered sugar.

If you don’t have an ice cream processor but are still wanting an ice cream and stout-y treat, how about a stout and ice cream float?

The first time I heard about this I was at a diner in San Francisco called the St Francis Fountain and they had a Guinness Float on their menu. Of course, I freaked out a little at first, but as I’m a huge fan of Guinness and Vanilla Stoli together, I knew that a stout float would be excellent.

So, if you’re bored of mulled wine and mulled cider and mulled anything and everything – then I suggest trying a stout float!

This will only work with stouts – although some fruit beers might be just as nice – so grab a bottle of Titanic Stout or can of Guinness and some vanilla ice cream and get ready!

I made my float in a pint glass, which takes about three scoops of ice cream.

Then open your stout and slowly pour it over the ice cream. You should be able to get about half of the bottle or can into the glass, but you can always add more ice cream or stout as you go.
Add a straw and a long spoon, and you’re all set!

This is the perfect treat for Boxing Day when everyone is fed up Christmas food!

Note: I used Titanic Stout with my vanilla ice cream, but found it a bit bitter. If you find your ale doesn’t quite mix with your ice cream, add some chocolate powder to sweeten things up

Women I’d Love to Have a Beer With

Posted by Cate Sevilla on 5:52 pm, December 21, 2009

Image via Genealogy PhotosWhen women meet up, it’s very rare that they meet up for a pint. Sure, I do this with some of my girlfriends, but the majority of the female population meet and bond over bottles of red, mojitos or cappuccinos.

Men are always saying “let’s go for a pint” and “we should do beers soon” and so that got me thinking that there are actually a good number of women that I would love to sit down and have a pint with.

I can picture us, sitting there, in a warm and cozy “old man pub” over our ales and girly banter. It sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

So, who are the five women I’d love to meet for a pint?

Sarah Palin
Mind you, I might have to storm out at some point, but I’d really love to see what she’s like over a bottle of, say, Brew Dog’s Trashy Blonde. What would she talk about if I said politics were off limits? Would we discuss hunting? Hockey? Maybe we would bond over something unexpected like how useful Spanx are. The possibilities are endless. (As well as highly unlikely.)

Catherine Tate
She’s absolutely insane, so I imagine meeting up for a beer would be quite an experience, indeed. She seems like such a fascinating person with so many different experiences (“So, you’ve technically snogged David Tennant… how was that?”) and I’d think she’d be a blast to sit with over a couple pints of Oranjeboom. Maybe by the second round she’d start talking in her different character’s voices. Oh to dream.

Anna Wintour
Admittedly we would just be sitting in silence as she surely would refuse to answer any of my questions or to make small talk with such a peon as myself. However, if she were to talk, and if I could manage to get her to drink some Kasteel Cru, I’m sure she’d be absolutely fascinating to talk to. Would she be able to talk about anything other than fashion? Would she drink the entire beer? How many times would she check her Blackberry throughout the conversation? Tis a mystery!

Sonya Walger
Perhaps best known as “the wife in FlashForward” or “Penny from Lost”, Sonya has the most amazing eyes and facial expressions on primetime TV. Ever. A British girl who married an American and now lives in LA, I’d love to buy her a pint of Guinness and hear all about what it’s like to star in two of the most insane television shows ever created. Then I might drill her for whatever secrets she knows, but that’s beside the point. Guinness and Walger sounds like a fun night out. Plus, she might even tell me how she gets her hair so shiny.

Lady GaGa
Yes, this seems like a very obvious answer, but can you imagine the one and only GaGa in a pub with a pint of Belle-Vue in hand? Would she be in “GaGa” character, or would I get to talk to her as just Stephanie? Would she break out into song? Would she be wearing pants? WHO KNOWS. A pint with GaGa would surreal and amazing on so many levels. Eccentricity goes well with ale, so imagine there would be plenty of things to talk about. Plus, I might even buy her some nachos to see if she’d stick around longer than just a pint.

Chocolate & Stout Ice Cream Recipe

Posted by Cate Sevilla on 4:37 pm, December 14, 2009

Image © BitchBuzz

Beer and ice cream are two of my favorite things, so when I found out that you could actually combine the two, I literally trembled with excitement.

Making your own ice cream at home sounds incredibly daunting, but I promise you it’s not. If you’re keen on making your own ice cream at home, all you’ll need is a handful of ingredients, a bottle of Titanic Stout, and an ice cream processor. (Don’t have an ice cream processor? You can get one at Lakeland for £50!)

The lovely Cellar Man over at LivingBeer’s AleChair blog was incredibly gracious and shared his special ice cream recipe with me, and it is beyond delicious.

What You’ll Need

175g granulated sugar
1½ tsp cocoa powder
4 egg yolks
1 bottle of Titanic Stout

What To Do

To make the ice cream, halve the vanilla pod lengthways and scrape out the seeds. Then, add the vanilla to a pan with the double cream, stout and sugar and bring up to the boil.

In a large bowl, mix together the cocoa powder and the egg yolks, blending thoroughly.

Add a small amount of the stout cream to the cocoa powder and egg yolks, whisking quickly to temper the eggs.

Add the egg mixture to the pan and cook until thick, whisking constantly. Cool the mixture, and then process in an ice cream maker.

The Cellar Man’s original recipe calls for Mud City Stout, but I prefer to use Titanic Stout. However, you can pretty much use any stout of your choice! If you do end up making this delicious treat, let us know what you thought and which beer you used!

Five Beers For Women Who Don’t Like Beer

Posted by Cate Sevilla on 4:16 pm,

Image © BitchBuzz

A lot of women who say that they don’t like beer have probably just been drinking the wrong beers.
(Or at least I hope.)

I know when I was younger, the only beers I was ever exposed to were about as tasty as Bud Light, so I never knew that I was a beer drinker at heart until I started to find beers that didn’t taste like hops mixed with acid rain.

So! If you’re interested in unleashing your love of beer, where should you start?

Kasteel Cru
If you love champagne and you’re hoping to move on to lager, Kasteel Cru is the best place to start. Light, slightly sweet but with all the same kick of a proper beer, Kasteel Cru is one of my favorite beers to enjoy if I’m looking for something light, without ordering a light beer. There’s also a rose version if you’re feeling like you want something a bit pink.

Sol
Some may say that Sol is a sissy beer, but it’s really not. It’s a bit stronger than Corona or Corona Light, but it’s still not as harsh as say other lagers . Sol goes fantastically with lime, Mexican food, and the summer sun better than any other beer I know.

Blue Moon
If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, Blue Moon may not be as light and un-beer like as Kasteel Cru, but it’s citrusy and slightly sweet and is absolute heaven with a slice of orange. Blue Moon is one of my absolute favorite beers, and I think is a good beer for someone who has tried a lighter beer, like Sol, but is thinking they can handle something a bit more robust. And orangey.

Cranberry Fruli
This is a beer for someone who doesn’t like the taste of beer, but is willing to try one. If you’re a fan of Woo Woos or frilly cocktails, a pint of Cranberry Fruli is probably something you will very much enjoy. There is also a strawberry Fruli, but I find it incredibly sweet and almost too much. However, feel free to check out the strawberry Fruli if you’re not a fan of cranberries!

Raspberry Grand Cru
Meantime Brewery make some fantastic beers, and while they’re Raspberry Grand Cru beer isn’t overwhelmingly fruity, it’ still has that “refreshing tang” and is rather light. Raspberry Grand Cru also goes well with chocolatey and sweet desserts, so why not replace your dessert wine or Bailey’s with a bottle of with a chocolate cupcake?
