Breaking into the ‘boy’s club’ of beer ads

Interesting to see the outcry about the Oven Pride ad last week which received 673 complaints that the advert was offensive for suggesting men are ‘stupid and lazy.’
However – think of a beer advert from the last few years which features positive, non-stereotypical depictions of women… bet you can’t. Beer advertising has traditionally focused on men, featuring women as scantily-clad, in masculine roles or as the ‘weaker’ sex. Almost half (42%) of women polled in our research said that a change to advertising is the biggest thing that could be done to make beer more appealing to them.
What do you think of beer advertising? Are you offended by it? What would you like to see change, and how would you like see women targeted or depicted?

I am a woman who loves beer. There are a number of clever beer ads that make me laugh. However, when I do see an ad that depicts women as objects, it is frustrating. It would be nice to see more beer advertisements that reach out to the women who drink beer.

I would say that the most of the beer ads are focused on men.. but that doesn’t mean i’m offended by them. In fact, the majority of beer adverts out there are awesome and are probably the best adverts produced for television! It would be good to see a few more designed for women, but that doens’t mean i don’t giggle and enjoy the ones that are out there already
