This week The Times ran a really interesting article about BitterSweet, “Why don’t women drink beer?” In the article Janet Street-Porter talks about why she hates everything about beer culture, stating “I hate all the crap that goes with beer… one in four pubs is closing and they deserve to close because they are bloody crap!”
Do you agree with Janet? At BitterSweet, we like to head down to the local pub with our mates, but what do you think about pubs? Do you think they only cater to men and football hooligans or do you think they are just as accommodating to women?

In all honesty, i don’t think Janet really knows what she’s talking about and I seriously doubt that she’s thought that statement through.
I do think that certain pubs do just cater for men, but i also know that there are so many pubs out there that now cater for women too. Just think of all the gastro pubs that have popped up over the years. Modern furnishings, brasserie stlye food, quality wine menus, i mean.. olives as bar snacks?! – they are defintitely trying to accomodate us!

I think janet has the beer culture all wrong as beer works well in good establishments, if the Landlord and the interior make the pub a welcoming place and a nice destination outlet, then whatever products they are serving will work if they are of good quality.
I think it would help if more pubs marketed beers to women more than they do now, using nice glassware offer a attractive half glass not a pint glass. Also make facts about calorie intake noticable with posters.
Janet may have a point saying some of them deserve to close as they should up there game to make there outlet a place you would want to visit, if they can’t be bothered to do this then maybe they are better off not trading!

Yes but considering the current economic climate, i’m sure many pubs would love to improve their outlet and make it look better but they just simply can’t afford to do anything.. so is it fair for those pubs to close?!

The pub’s that are making an effort in their outlet will make an impact on their customer’s it doesn’t have to be a finacial effort, just making the atmosphere more welcoming right from the cleaning to the company. Working with the outlets day to day i find a lot of clubland pubs are just not willing to make this change or effort which is sad to see. Nobody deserves to close, some of them just need to stand up and realise the change in times and take action this could help pull them out of a slump.
